I CAN (Conquer Academics Now)
A New Program and Group for Underachievers

Is your child capable of making average or above average grades but consistently underachieves in school?

Does your child:

  • Spend more time avoiding homework assignments than it would actually take to complete them?

  • Consistently lie (even if he does not usually tell lies) about schoolwork?

  • Convince himself (and you) that “this semester will be different”?

  • Experience angry outbursts when confronted with the truth?

  • Say he feels like you are trying to control his life when you ask for accountability regarding schoolwork?

  • Genuinely try to pull up his grades at the end of each quarter (or actually is able to do so)?

  • Spend hours on computer games, watching TV, or on the phone?

  • Want to drop out of organized activities because they interfere with his freedom?

  • Cleverly change the subject when schoolwork is addressed?

  • Become a different (noticeably happier) child in the summer?

  • Try to convince you that your expectations are “way too high” when it comes to academic success?

  • Point out, no matter how bad his grades are, that it “could have been worse”?

  • If you answered yes to most of these questions, your child may be appropriate for enrollment in the I CAN (Conquer Academics Now) Program. The program combines structure and support to offer a framework for students to break the negative cycle of underachievement. The program is under the overall direction of Ray Kinney, MS, a psychotherapist who has been working with school-age children for over 20 years in the Waukesha and metro-Milwaukee areas.
