I
CAN (Conquer Academics Now)
A
New Program and Group for Underachievers
Is
your child capable of making average or above average
grades but consistently underachieves in school?
Does your child:
Spend more time avoiding homework assignments than it would actually take to complete them?
Consistently lie (even if he does not usually tell lies) about schoolwork?
Convince himself (and you) that “this semester will be different”?
Experience angry outbursts when confronted with the truth?
Say he feels like you are trying to control his life when you ask for accountability regarding schoolwork?
Genuinely try to pull up his grades at the end of each quarter (or actually is able to do so)?
Spend hours on computer games, watching TV, or on the phone?
Want to drop out of organized activities because they interfere with his freedom?
Cleverly change the subject when schoolwork is addressed?
Become a different (noticeably happier) child in the summer?
Try to convince you that your expectations are “way too high” when it comes to academic success?
Point out, no matter how bad his grades are, that it “could have been worse”?
If you answered yes to most of these questions, your child may be appropriate for enrollment in the I CAN (Conquer Academics Now) Program. The program combines structure and support to offer a framework for students to break the negative cycle of underachievement. The program is under the overall direction of Ray Kinney, MS, a psychotherapist who has been working with school-age children for over 20 years in the Waukesha and metro-Milwaukee areas.
